Our reviews wouldn’t be complete without choosing our top choice and one of the best choices on the market is the Snow Joe iON13SS. This model is powered by a 40-volt lithium-ion battery and that gives it a surprising amount of power.
It stands up quite well against some of the corded electric options on the market. The battery lasts up to 52 minutes on a charge depending on how much work you’re putting it through and that’s more than enough for most driveways. This isn’t powerful enough to handle heavy snowfalls, but it’s ideal for a couple of inches and for using on your sidewalks, walkways, and decks.
The reason why we’ve chosen this as the best cordless electric snow shovel is because it offers a pretty decent overall package of features. Its clearing path is only about 13 inches though, so you may have to make a fair number of passes if you have a large driveway. On the positive side it can throw that snow about 25 feet which should be more than enough to get it out of your way.
While it is supposed to be able to handle up to 6-inch deep snow, it works best when the snow is no more than 3 to 4 inches deep. It will also clear about 300 pounds of snow per minute.

You might think that a battery-powered snow shovel would be fairly heavy, but this model weighs less than 15 pounds. That’s a nice comfortable weight to work with.
Unfortunately there is no directional chute, but as we mentioned already it does throw the snow a fair distance. It comes equipped with a 2-year warranty which is fairly standard. Perhaps one of the biggest complaints with this cordless electric snow shovel is that the initial assembly can be a little difficult.
2. Snow Joe 323E
Snow Joe has quite a few great products in the electric snow shovel category and the 323E model is another great option from them. This machine is powered by a 10-amp motor and it retails for about $80 – it combines affordability with some pretty serious snow clearing ability.
One of the main considerations with any snow removal equipment is how much snow it can clear per minute. This shovel can clear about 400 pounds in 60 seconds. It creates a 13-inch clear path with each pass, which is impressive for an electric snow shovel.
Like other snow shovels though, it isn’t meant for clearing deep snow. If you have more than about 6 inches on the ground you’re going to have trouble with this machine. You can try just taking a layer off the top, but then can be a little cumbersome.
If you stick to using it in light snowfalls and avoid the heavy stuff – you’ll be just fine. But if you need something for heavier snowfalls, you may want to look at heavy-duty snow blowers instead.

We do have a couple of concerns with this machine though – other than its poor performance in heavy snow. You only really want to use this model on paved walkways and driveways. It’s not rugged enough to handle any stones or debris in its path. Trying to clear areas like these will likely cause damage to the auger.
There’s also no way to change the direction of the snow – it simply throws everything in front of you.
Overall this is a good snow shovel. It has the same issues that most small snow clearing devices have – it’s simply not meant to be used in heavy snowfalls and you have to use it on paved paths. If you’re only using it for these purposes it’s ideal.
3. Snow Joe 24V-SS10
The Snow Joe 24-volt SS10 is a little more expensive than some of their other snow shovel models, but it’s still affordable at around $150. The main reason for the higher price tag is the extra power that this machine has.
Most in this category offer somewhere between 10 and 15 amps – this shovel is powered by a 24-volt battery. This has made it one of the most popular electric snow shovels on the market today.
The 24V-SS10 is designed to run for about 25 minutes on one charge. That’s not a long time, but it’s usually enough to clear the sidewalk and steps, which is what most people use these machines for. It cuts a 10.6-inch path with each pass an throws snow up to 20 feet, so you don’t have to worry about going over the same snow multiple times.
What we like (and don’t like) about the Snow Joe 24V-SS10:

The downside with this machine from Snow Joe is that it just isn’t designed to handle deep snow. The manufacturers specs says it’s good for up to 6 inches, but it works best with 4 inches or less. It also doesn’t handle wet snow very well.

This is generally a good machine, as long as you use it for what it was designed for. Use this on the light snow close to the house and you’ll be just fine. It can even work well on small driveways.
4. Earthwise SN70010
Earthwise offers one of the best corded electric snow shovels on the market. It’s also a great value at less than $100. The SN70010 model has decent power, produced by a 9-amp motor than can clear up to 300 pounds of snow per minute.
Where this machine really excels, is in the fine details. It’s equipped with an adjustable auxiliary handle to fit users of all sizes. It also has a cord retention hook that prevents your cord from being tangled or dragging in the wet snow.
At just 11 pounds, it’s one of the lightest powered snow clearing devices you’ll find. The SN70010 will work well in up to 5 inches of snow and it can throw the snow 25 feet.
What we like (and don’t like) about the Earthwise SN70010:
- Reliable 9-amp motor.
- Adjustable handle.
- Throws snow up to 25 feet.
- Cord retention hook.
- Lightweight at 11 pounds.
- Struggles with moderate to heavy snowfalls.
- Wears quickly with overuse.
The problem with this machine is that it isn’t designed for heavy use. It will wear out quickly if you try to remove more than a couple of inches of snow at a time.
We found it had trouble even dealing with the 5 inches it’s designed for. If you want to clear your walks clear in light snowfall this is the machine for you, otherwise there are better options.
The bottom line is, that as long as this machine is used for what is was intended for it will do a good job. A few inches of snow on walkways is no problem. Consider other options for anything heavier.
5. Greenworks 2600802
The Greenworks 2600802 corded snow shovel, is our choice as best value for the money. This model typically retails for well under $100. It comes equipped with an 8-amp motor, although when you use it feels more powerful than that.
The main thing you look for in a snow removal device is its total removal capacity. This machine cuts a 12-inch path with each pass, which exceeds the industry average. It’s also capable of throwing snow nearly 20 feet out of the way.
It isn’t meant for blizzard conditions, but if you’re dealing with 6 inches of snow or less it works just fine. At 14 pounds, it’s not very heavy either.
What we like (and don’t like) about the Greenworks 2600802:
- Priced under $100.
- Clears a 12-inch path with each pass.
- Works in up to 6 inches of snow.
- A bit bulky and awkward.
- Can’t change the direction of the snow.
What we didn’t like about this model from Greenworks was the feel of that. It just feels a little bulky and awkward when you use it. Also, you can’t adjust the snow removal direction – it throws the snow in front of you, so it’s up to you to angle it away from your driveway.
It may be a bit awkward, but for the most part this is a good machine. It cuts a nice wide path for an electric snow shovel and its priced just right.
6. Kobalt KSS 2540A-06
Kobalt may not be a household name when it comes to snow removal, but it should be. The Kobalt 40-volt electric snow blower, is one of the largest machines in the electric snow shovel category – don’t let the name fool you, this is a snow shovel not a snow blower. It’s also easily one of the most powerful cordless snow shovels around with its 40-volt battery.
With that extra power, you can clear a fair bit of snow. This Kobalt machine clears a 12-inch path with each pass. Like most products in this category, it works best in snowfalls no more than 6 inches. It has a nice dual handle grip and the handle is adjustable to your height.
What we like (and don’t like) about the Kobalt KSS 2540A-06:

- Clears up to 6 inches of snow.
- Bogs down in heavy snow.
- Heavy at 15 pounds.
On the negative side, this machine from Kobalt is a little heavier than its competitors – it weighs in at about 15 pounds. It also will get bogged down in heavy snow. If you’re facing a snowfall of more than 3 or 4 inches, you may still need to use your manual shovel at times.
The Kobalt is a good machine. The extra power you get from its 40-volt battery allows you to throw snow a good distance. If it was a bit lighter we’d rate it higher, but generally, it’s one of the best electric snow shovels around.

There’s always going to be one machine that out powers the competition and when it comes to cordless snow shovels that device is the Snapper SXDSS82K. With a best in class 82-volt battery, it’s the biggest battery you’ll find in one of these products.
The reason we didn’t select it as our top choice is because we had to consider how people use these machines. Generally consumers are looking for something that’s lightweight and easily maneuverable – this is a bulky snow shovel. It weighs more than 25 pounds and that may be a little much for some users.
If a slightly heavier machine does not deter you, then this shovel has a lot to offer. It will last for up to 45 minutes on one charge that far exceeds the industry average for cordless snow blowers. It powers through snow up to 4 inches deep, cutting a 12-inch path and throwing it up to 20 feet.

How to Choose an Electric (Powered) Snow Shovel?
Each electric snow shovel we review has the same basic features, but some of them perform better than others. Understanding what the minimum expectations should be makes your buying decision that much easier.
Snow Per Minute
A snow blower whether it’s manual, gas, or electric has to be able to keep up with the amount of snowfall you expect to be faced with in your area. That can be a challenge for an electric snow shovel – especially if you live in a northern climate with significant snow falls.
When purchasing an electric snow shovel one thing you should be playing close attention to is how much snow it can move in a minute. At a minimum it should be able to move a few hundred pounds or you’re probably better off sticking with a manual shovel.
Amps
Anyone who’s ever had to shovel large amounts of snow in a short period of time knows how much work it can be. When you’re using an electric shovel you’re transferring some of that workload to the shovel by use of electric power – it needs to be powerful enough to handle the workload. You don’t want a shovel with a tiny electric motor that will burn out after just a couple of uses.
That’s why you need to pay close attention to the amount of amps which is an indicator of how powerful the electric motor is. Typically electric snow shovels range between 5 and 15 amps. If you live in a heavy snowfall area a 5-amp motor will not get the job done.
Path Width
Whenever I’ve shoveled a driveway with a manual snow shovel I inevitably end up a little frustrated with how many passes I have to make up the driveway before it’s cleared. It can be a lot of work. Obviously the wider the path that your electric snow shovel handles with each pass will determine how long it takes you to get the job done.
The best-rated electric snow shovels will clear a path in excess of 12 inches with each path, but there are some that cut a path that’s only about 4 inches. These types of shovels may be more appropriate for clearing walkways than driveways.
Overall Mobility
A great thing about an electric snow shovel vs. a snow blower is that it’s considerably lighter. That has a lot to do with the fact that it doesn’t have a heavy internal combustion engine to weigh you down.
Electric motors don’t have as many moving parts making them much lighter. As a result, even the largest electric snow shovels are much lighter and easier to maneuver than a gas-powered snow blower.
The Bottom Line
There are many reasons to choose an electric snow shovel over a gasoline-powered blower. They’re certainly more affordable and there’s no doubt they have a much more positive effect on the environment.
That being said the cord can be a bit of a pain to work around and they aren’t really suitable for deep heavy snow. Fortunately, there are some great battery-powered models on the market today as well.
